ACAO Session Description

At the Pleasure of the President:  Joan F. Lorden, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Beth Ingram, Northern Illinois University, and Kathy E. Johnson, Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis

The average length of service for a CAO is 4.6 years, much shorter than the average presidential term of 6.7 years. A recent survey of Chief Academic Officers concluded that the number one factor affecting how long a CAO stays in that position is the relationship the CAO has with the institution's president. This panel will discuss the unique relationship between the CAO and the president, how to support the success of that relationship, and how to assess when it's time for the CAO to move on. The panelists will offer their own viewpoints and ask the attendees to discuss their perspectives and experiences in the CAO position. Attendees will leave the session with tips, resources, and "food for thought" as they navigate their relationship with their own current -- or future -- president.
