Junius J. GonzalesMontclair State University As Montclair State University’s Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and second highest ranking official, Junius J. Gonzales, M.D., M.B.A., leads the university’s academic programs for teaching, research, scholarship and creative inquiry and service in ten schools and colleges, and is responsible for academic planning, new initiatives in teaching and learning, faculty and academic staff development, and the libraries. He previously served as Provost at the New York Institute of Technology and the University of Texas at El Paso and was the Chief Academic Officer and Senior Vice President for the University of North Carolina system. Trained as a physician and health services researcher, he served in numerous leadership roles at the National Institutes of Health and a consulting firm, and was founding dean for the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences at the University of South Florida. Provost Gonzales has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including the New York Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 2021 Educational Excellence Award. He has also served on national committees for federal agencies such as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and for higher education associations such as the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities. His research interests include mental health disparities among the Latinx population, the treatment of depression, and non-cognitive factors that influence college student success. He has received $15 million in research funding from sources that include the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Gates Foundation and published more than 50 scholarly papers and book chapters. Gonzales has held high-level leadership roles in academia, federal government, and the private sector. Dr. Gonzales holds degrees from Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and the University of Maryland. |
