ACAO Membership

Annual membership is available for accredited not-for-profit two- and four-year institutions and for-profit institutions. ACAO is the only association for academic affairs leaders representing  public, private, 4- and 2-year institutions; from not-for-profit, for-profit, research, liberal arts, and technical colleges; from urban and suburban, large and small, specialized and comprehensive, US-based and international universities, colleges, community colleges, and universities. For each institutional membership, the primary representative is the CAO. Other academic leadership individuals of the campus should and can be included in the institution's membership.

There are three categories of ACAO memberships: Institutional, Individual, and Professional/Associate. The membership period for all membership types is the fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).

Membership Options

1. Institutional Membership is open to any accredited institution or system of higher education.  System membership is open to the system provost only.  Campus provosts must join as their own institution, separate from the system.  Membership is open to persons who serve in the position of Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the College and/or similar title constituting a chief academic officer. For such institutional members, the CAO is the designated voting representative. Annual dues for institutional members are determined by the size and mission (Carnegie classification) of the institution.  

Institutional Membership Fees (based on Carnegie Classification):

Associate Degree Granting Institutions: Small = $200; Medium = $300; Large = $400
Baccalaureate Colleges: $500
Doctoral Degree Granting/Research Institutions & Systems: $1,500
Master's Degree Granting Institutions: Small = $500; Medium = $750; Large = $1,000
Special Focus Institutions: $500
Tribal Colleges: $500

2. Emeritus Membership status is not intended for sitting Provosts, but for any person who at any time in the past, has served in the position of Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the College and/or similar title constituting a chief academic officer of an institution of higher education or system of higher education, and is no longer affiliated with an institution. Emeritus members of ACAO shall not have the power to vote, nor are they eligible for election to the Board of Directors or to serve as officers of the Association. 

Emeritus Membership: $75.00/year. This member type is only available to past CAOs.

3. Professional Organization/Associate Membership is open to any organization whose work is aligned with the mission of ACAO. Professional organization/associate members shall not have the power to vote, nor are they eligible for election to the Board of Directors or to serve as officers. Please contact [email protected] directly to schedule an exploratory call. 

Professional Associations and Organizations: $500
